Everyone has to be out of
Power Broker when doing your upgrade.
1) Run a complete backup of
your \BRO directory
Reasons why you should backup
An alternative backup method - Click here
2) Run steps 1, 2,3 and 4 in
your Power Broker PBMech Utility.
Click here for further PBMech Utility details and installation
instructions.
3) If you received a key file in an email from our office, save the key file to your \BRO folder on your
server. If you are not renewing and you do not have a key
file, and only wish to upgrade Power Broker, please skip the key portion of
these instructions and proceed to the next step.
Instructions on how to find your \BRO directory are located on the
right hand side of this document.
4)
Download and save setup.exe file to your computer
(Usually MyDocuments)
download setup.exe
5) When you open setup.exe file, it will say:
NOTE: In these instructions, the screen capture says 'Build 28'.
This is just a screen capture and not the real version. The build that
you are upgrading too will obviously be a higher number ( 29, 30, 31, 32
ect...)

Click Next. On the next screen, you must make sure that you 'BROWSE' to the
\BRO folder on your 'SERVER'.

Click OK, and then click yes.

This should bring you back to the BROWSE BUTTON, and you should have your
server's drive, plus your \BRO folder displayed next to the BROWSE button.
6) Run the installation.
7) Click Finish
Determining what method you
use...

Are you on this
method...?
Approximately 80% of all offices have the standard setup that has Power
Broker located on the server, and an icon on their desktop that points
to a mapped drive (An example would be T:\BRO).
If you have this setup, then double click your Power Broker icon and
proceed to step 7.
Or are you on this
one...?
The other 20% is using a system that's called "Running on a Large LAN"
that has 27 files located at each workstation. If you are using the LAN
method, then walk over to your server and open Power Broker from there,
or go to 'Start' and then 'Run' from a workstation and type in the mapped drive of where
Power Broker can be found and include the BROW.EXE executable and
proceed to step 7.

If you use the "Running on a Large LAN" setup, then please
print the following instructions. |

8) With either setup method, once you launch Power Broker, an automatic Data Conversion and
then a Pack and Re-Index should start automatically.
Once completed, a request to print off the enhancement listings appears.
The next is the log in screen.
9) Type in your password and hit 'Return' on your keyboard.
"Running on a Large LAN" offices should exit Power Broker at this stage and
follow through with the rest of the
Running on a Large LAN instructions.
At the very top left of your screen, you should see the Power Broker build
number that you just installed. If it still has the same build number as you
had been using before, then you made a mistake and should call our office.
Should you receive a black box error number 36 or 202, click with your mouse
into the screen and the pack and re-index will continue. Once the pack and
re-index is completed, you and your office will be able to log in to Power
Broker and continue working. Please call our office about these two 'middle
severity' errors as soon as possible.
Should you receive a black box error 12, or 41 or any other error, call our
office right away. Power Broker will not work properly until this is
resolved.

Reasons why you should backup and
an alternative
backup method - A must read!
It's
tremendously important to backup your \BRO folder on your server to an
external hard drive or some other form of backup device. It's even
more important to have someone verify that your data is actually being
backed up and that the software that's doing the backup can actually
restore files when needed.
Backing up your Power Broker directory can save you months of
re-entering your customers, policies, transactions, and all of your table
setup should the worst case scenario happen.
Before you download and apply this upgrade, you need to be 100% sure that your
backup is working correctly and that your backup has been recently
checked for it's restore capabilities. If your not exactly sure, you should download
and install Winzip and then have the option of Winziping your entire \BRO
folder to a zip file that will condense and save a copy of Power Broker
before you apply your upgrade. This will ensure that should something
go wrong, you have a clean copy of Power Broker before it was upgraded
and/or changed during the upgrade procedure.
Some brokers say "Yes, we do backups every night so
I'm ok!"
This is usually nine times out of ten a true statement, but for the few that have had
to access their backups because of a bad sector on their hard drive,
power outages, or locked files from people still in a terminal server
connection that damaged a database, or for any other reason, that having a
temporary backup BRO.zip file is the safety parachute that
one hopes that they never need to use but is there in case you need it.
If you are a local tech applying this Power Broker upgrade, please confirm
with the customer that it's ok to take the time to do an alternative winzip backup of the
\BRO directory before applying this upgrade.
If you are a customer that does your own upgrades, then please go to
www.power-broker.com/links.htm and
download and install the most recent version of Winzip and zip your entire
\BRO directory into a file such as c:\backupbro\broMay142005.zip as an
example.
Thank you.

Question:
May I skip from an older version to the newer version (Build 28 to 31 as an
example)?
Answer:
Yes you may! The Newest setup file that you download will include all
previous upgrades so if you miss a few builds, you just play catch up at
anytime.
How to find your \BRO directory
Right click over your Power Broker icon, left click on Properties
and then click on the Shortcut Key.

By having a C:\bro target line, this indicates that
you are either sitting at the server, or your a single user office or that
your office uses the "Running on a Large LAN setup".
By having a T:\bro or any other letter of the alphabet would mean that you
are sitting at a workstation, and that you have the standard setup for most
Power Broker offices that uses a mapped drive to the server.
Quick Instructions:
Save your key.app file to the \BRO directory on your server.
Download and save the setup.exe file to your computer.
Run the setup.exe once downloaded and 'BROWSE' to your server's \BRO directory and
proceed.
If you use the "Running on a Large LAN" setup,
then please click
here and print the following instructions.
