Running on a Large LAN or through a Remote Connection

SUMMARY
On larger LAN’s or running Power Broker remotely through Windows/PC-Anywhere/Novell Connect, the speed of Power Broker can be improved. Networks with 10 or more users should implement this method.

RESOLUTION
Power Broker can be configured, so that the program is executed on the workstation hard drive, with only data files transferred over the LAN or remote connection. To accomplish this, the following steps must be accomplished.

Note : These changes should only be performed by someone with a good understanding of DOS. If you do not have this experience, please forward this bulletin to your network or computer dealer to make these changes.

Step 1
Create a directory on the local directory called ‘BRO’ on the c: drive of the workstation.

Step 2

Copy the following files from the Power Broker directory on the file server, to the workstation hard drive in the newly created ‘BRO’ directory.

  ACCOUNT.APP
ACCOUNTF.APP
APPS.APP
APPSF.APP
APPSU.APP
BROW.EXE
CAN.APP
CANF.APP
CARRIBB.APP
CHOICE.APP
CHOICEF.APP
CONFIG.FPW
EDI.APP
EDIF.APP
  FOXFIX.EXE
FOXFIX.FLL
FOXFIX.PLB
FOXTOOLS.FLL
FOXW2600.ESL
GRID.APP
GRIDF.APP
GRIDU.APP
POPUP.APP
POPUPF.APP
USA.APP
WIN.APP
WINF.APP

APPSU.APP, GRIDU.APP, AND USA.APP are so new to Power Broker, that they may NOT be listed in your \BRO directory after completing your upgrade.  Simply skip them if they are and continue copying the rest of your the files listed.

Step 3

Create an icon with the following information
Command Line
C:\BRO\BROW.EXE
Start Directory C:\BRO

Step 4

Edit the ‘CONFIG.FPW’ on each workstation to include the following lines -
(we will use drive F:\ in the example)
DEFAULT=F:\BRO
TMPFILES=C:\BRO
Please also review the NOTE at the bottom of this page regarding CONFIG.FPW.

Step 5

In the root of C:\ on the workstation, type dir autoexec.bat.
Should this directory search say <  1 Files > , then this means that you have an autoexec.bat.  If you have one then edit it following the next procedure.  If your search says < File Not Found > , then please skip this next procedure.

Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on each workstation  (Windows XP does not have an autoexec.bat but an autoexec.nt located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder)
Add the following line:
SET PBAPP=C:\BRO

This configuration will launch the workstation copy of Power Broker, but will run all remaining programs located in the Start Directory path.
Note : When using this configuration, as program upgrades are applied, the files that were copied from the network server to the workstation, must be re-copied, and this will have to be done on all workstations each time an update is applied.

It would be beneficial if each user has the ability to update the program files as needed, this can be accomplished via an icon, or from the network login file.

Note : Edit the CONFIG.FPW in the File Server’s \BRO> directory prior to copying back to the local C:\BRO> directories. This way you will only need to modify these files once.

These steps need to be completed every time you do a Power Broker upgrade.
