Eventually, everyone needs to update their server, or for smaller offices, you sit right at the server, and have purchased a stand alone computer that is going to be the new home for your PB4 software. This document is designed to help you along the way, but if you feel that this is over your head, you may want to consider speaking with your local technical representative for assistance as this does involve networking and backing up your Power Broker data. Establishing what drive letter you use: The first thing you would need to do is sit at a workstation, right click over your Power Broker icon and then go to Properties. At the top, you would see 'Shortcut' and on this page, you would see a line that says 'Target'. It would generally read something like: Z:\BRO\BROW.EXE You would write this information down. Backing up your data: Power Broker is most commonly stored in a folder called \BRO. Mastercom is stored in a folder called \EMAIL Scanned Images are usually stored in a series of \Images folders. It would look something like this: Example ( you may not have a secondary images folder, or you may have more than two images directory, each office is different ) Z:\BRO Z:\Email Z:\Images Z:\Images2 You would then right click and make note of the size of each folder. You would obviously need to copy this data over from one server to the next. Here are a few options: You could compress the files using Winrar www.power-broker.com/winrarbackup.htm This documents on how to manually backup these directories and also gives you a link to a free copy of Winrar. Moving your data to the new server Once the files have been Winrar'd into four separate files ( bro.rar, email.rar, images.rar and images2.rar ) You would then copy these files from the old server to an external hard drive and then back to the new server. Another option if you do not plan on connecting the new server to the existing network, is to drop your data off at your FTP site. Another option would be to copy the compressed folders to one of the workstation, connect the workstations to the new network, and then copy from the workstation back to the server. Setting up your server with a share and setting security On the root of the C: drive of your new server, you would create a folder called DATA . You would right click over this folder and choose 'Properties'. In the properties, you would see an option to 'Share'. You would choose 'Share' and simply name it DATA. You would then go into the Permissions option and give 'EVERYONE' FULL control If you also see the 'Users' listed in the permission option, then give them FULL control as well. Click Apply, and then look for Security. Repeat the same procedure for Everyone and the Users listed in your list by giving them FULL permissions. Positioning your information After you have this new C:\DATA folder that has full permission for everyone, you would then need to revisit the files you compressed either on your FTP site or workstation, or USB drive. If you compressed your information, you would extract it to the DATA directory. At the end of this procedure, you should see something like this: C:\DATA\BRO C:\DATA\EMAIL C:\DATA\IMAGES C:\DATA\IMAGES2 Mapping your Network Drive Tricking the server to think it's a workstation Sitting at the server, map drive Z:\ back to it's own C:\DATA. Open Windows Explorer, choose Map Network Drive, choose the Z: drive, click on browse, and browse to Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, the domain or workgroup name, choose the server that Power Broker is loaded on, choose C: drive, then DATA, then OK. (Check mark in the ' Reconnect at logon ' ) Creating an Icon and Naming it on your server With a Z:\ drive now in Windows Explorer, you should see a \BRO folder. Find a file called BROW.EXE, right click on this file, and choose ' Send To Desktop, Create New Shortcut '. Rename the icon to Power Broker with a capital P and B please and change the icon by right clicking, going to properties, click change icon, browse, and then browse to Z:\BRO\BROW.EXE. Connecting your workstation Sitting at the workstation, and assuming that you have already joined your computer to your new servers Workgroup/Domain, ensure that you have disconnected the original drive you had on your last server. We are assuming that Z: was your last drive so in Windows Explorer, you would right click over the Z: drive and choose 'Disconnect'. Still sitting at the workstation in Windows Explorer, click on Tools, choose Map Network Drive, choose the Z: drive, click on browse, and browse to Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, the domain or workgroup name, choose the server that Power Broker is loaded on, choose C: drive, then DATA, then OK. (Check mark in the ' Reconnect at logon ' ). Creating an Icon and Naming it on your workstation With a Z:\ drive now in Windows Explorer, you should see a \BRO folder. Running Workstation.EXE On the SERVER and the Workstations, you will need to go to START, RUN, and then click BROWSE and go to your Z:\BRO folder and find a file called Workstation.exe. Double click this file, and then click OK on the run window. You would then click 'Run' if you get a security warning, and then click 'NEXT' and then 'FINISH'. That's it! What about Mastercom? Well, it all depends. If you were using Mastercom from a workstation and you used the exact same drive letter in the move ( which is vital ), then everything should be fine. We've guaranteed that you have brought over the EMAIL folder to the new server, and the workstations have the same mapped drive, so Mastercom has no idea that things have been moved around. If however you do EDI from the server, then ensure that everyone is not using the server and we'll need to restart the server in just a few steps. If the mapped drive was Z:\ and your icon points to Z:\BRO\BROW.EXE , then we'll have to set the servers MV Variable to Z:\EMAIL. To do this, you would need to go to Start, Control Panel, Systems, Advanced, Environment Variables, and in the 'Bottom' window, you would click on 'New' and under the 'Name' box, you would type MV and under the 'Variable' box, you would type Z:\EMAIL . You would click 'OK or Save' and then you need to REBOOT your server. Once the server is rebooted, you would need to go to www.mastercom.com/pwrbrker/ and follow the provided instructions. Other Integrations to Consider Other integrations to consider would be things like: Microsoft Word Integration If you kept the same drive path as your original server, Microsoft Word Integration should be fine. If you absolutely needed to change the drive letter, then please contact Power Broker as we would need to have you send us a series of files that would need some paths to be changed. Power Broker anchors the drive letter of a saved word document into a database. If the drive letter changes, the notes are still there, but you wouldn't be able to open any of your historical Microsoft Word Integration documents. ( Microsoft Word Integration and Scanning fee to change a drive letter is $100.00 plus tax ) Scanning Integration If you kept the same drive path as your original server, the Scanning Integration should be fine. If you absolutely needed to change the drive letter, then please contact Power Broker as we would need to have you send us a series of files that would need some paths to be changed. Power Broker anchors the drive letter of a saved scanned item into a database. If the drive letter changes, the record are still there, but you wouldn't be able to open any of your historical scanned items. ( Scanning and Microsoft Word Integration fee to change a drive letter is $100.00 plus tax ) Quoting Integration If you kept the same drive path as your original server, and you have installed your quoting software, you may need to re-browse in Utilities, Define your Company Information, Software directories to the path of where your new install of your quoting program is. Terminal Server Users Whether it's Terminal Server, Citrix or mapped workstations, these basic rules that are lined out should be used in all setups. Even sitting at the terminal server, you would create the folder called DATA on the root of C:, share it out, paste BRO and EMAIL into the C:\DATA folder and then after your permissions are set, you would map a drive Z or whatever your original drive letter was to start with back to the \DATA share. When you setup your Terminal Server User connections, you'll need to ensure that they use the same drive letter and path you did on the server. So in this example, Z:\BRO\BROW.EXE would be the way to go. What if on my old server, I used F: as my mapped drive, but on my new server, F: is being used by a build in hardware device like an extra hard drive? This Microsoft document outlines how to change the F: drive to another letter, giving you the opportunity to recycle the original drive letter you used. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844 If you plan on not doing this and you use Microsoft Word Integration or Scanning, you should contact our office immediately so we can setup a drive letter switch with you as previously mentioned above. |
